Ok I had a beer night last year, and it was bring what you think is the best beer and one you think the worst.
We all agreed Brothers Beer from Oakland was THE worst, smelt worse than it taste, that was bloody awful too.
A close second was McAndew's Scottish Ale, Bev Mo used to sell it, but pulled it several years back, I know why, The stuff is foul, and can only be used as paint stipper at best. -Thats if you do not mind the smell.
So I have to go one better this year, so folks give me your worst!!

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Tue, August 2, 2005 - 10:11 AMIn Cincinnati, there were two regional beers, Top Hat and Burger both brewed by Hudepohl-Schoenling. The absolute foulest tasting vile ever fermented. My friends dad had Burger on tap in his garage and it was so foul we avoided it like the plague. Wiedeman beer was also locally brewed and you had to have quite a few before you could get one down. Hudy Delight is now being brewed by a regional brewer in Maryland, a native Cincinnati product that still tastes good today, especially for a lite beer. I would be curious to see how many other regional beers (not craft brewed) but locally distribuited that were prevalent and now gone throughout the country. Olde Frothingslosh, Olde Dutch -Beers like that come to mind

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 8:54 PMMaybe it was a bad keg... I didn;t look at where you live, but in southern NY, ST. Andrew's run around $4/pint. At this price, the average beer-drinker isn;t going to buy it, and there it sits...for 6 months on a shelf. Another point, a beverage distributor is only going to reserve it's cooler-space for its fast-moving products. The shelves in a dank cement-block structure beverage outlet get pretty sultry and nasty in the summer, and that's where most of the supplies of high-end stuff sits while Budweiser and Michelob enjoy 38 degrees.
Lots of times I've run into expensive beers which were sitting around with all kinds junk precipitating to the bottoms of the bottles, after 8 months on the shelf. I've even tried some of my faves which were marked down due to this...and I was in for a nasty surprise. One example: Sam Adams Summer Ale which was almost a year old. -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Tue, August 30, 2005 - 8:59 PMI still have to think about "worst"...but I do have a cursed beer. Cursed because I DO like it, and sometimes quite a bit. But something about the way they do it, the brand of hops or something...will sometimes inflict me with a migraine headache. It is less a problem now as in my youth. Beer, wine, cheese, chocolate, carrots rinds, and other fermentables often have an amino acid called Tyrosine...which causes an allergic reaction in some and a subsequent migraine. I think this is what happens with me and Molson and some otehr beers sometimes. But I still refuse to refer to it a s"worst". I am still thinking on this! -

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 11:16 PMIf properly bottled and of course fermented correctly, beer can have a shelf-life in the area of a year! The probem, when incompletely feremtned, they continue to ferment on the shelf...unsupervised! And at room temperature, bacteria have a hand in it as well as the yeasts...which leads to build-up of some unappetizing acids. That is what causes preciptation in old beers sometimes. Ever notice how milk gets curdled by lemon juice or vinegar? BINGO! There can also be water build-up. But it just doesn't have to happen. Dark glass bottles or often better. Light plays a role too.
It is shittiest Amercian Milwaukee pseudo-pilsners which can't last long under the adverse conditions. They are OK ice cold with food...but generally one mishap and they start to suck. The difference between an open Becks and an open Bud in the morning is a great example! (If you dae to take a sip!) The bud will be like puke, while Becks still has some flavor and thickness, and a nice bite. The Bus is DONE. The King of Beers can't hold it's own! ;-) -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 11:20 PMDissolved solids also plays a role in a beer maintaining texture. If the alcohol breaks down into water, the solubility gradually becomes less. The solids drop ot of solution and fall to the bottom. There's alot of shit that can happen to a beer. Beer is more vulnerable than wine in aging process becasue so much more goes into a beer. Beer AND the process of making it are more complex than winemaking. More can go wrong. But with proper attention, beer can age almost as gracefully as a wine.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sat, September 3, 2005 - 11:26 PM...and although I would drink most beer cold, I am of the school of thought that if a beer isn't still somewhat enjoybale at room temperature...then it genuinely sucks. (Of course, I am pretty much a certified Kraut, so beer and I get along in all kinds of siutations.) ;-) That means that Bud and most of it's American contemporaries ae pisswater in disguise. I won't even get into the subject of Meister Brau and the like. Don't even bring it up. -
-

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 12:57 AM" most of it's American contemporaries are pisswater in disguise."
You need to drink more American Microbrews. Most American beer offerings are microbrews. Thought Bud, Coors and Miller brew the most in bulk, Microbrews are the majority as for as variety.
I am not sure what American brews you are drinking but the ones I drink kick ass.
So as far as worst beers ever, I wish to add Beck's and St. Pauli Girl to the list. Just because it is brewed by the specs of the German Purity Law, does not make it good. Thin watery abominations of what good lagers can be. That is what Beck's and St. Pauli Girl are. -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 7:49 AMOh, I know, Man... I've tried many. In fact, my Onkle Rainer of Bavaria owns a microbrewery...althoguh it is amittedly seem better days. He's a loner and he's getting old. Being that I appeciate both a good beer AND a good wine, I like different varieties of thick "Beligian" ales as exmplified by the Cooperstown Ommegang brewery in upstate NY.
Well, I never nver claimed Becks and St.Pauili are my favorites, they're not... But they beat the pants off any mainstream American beer.
Personally, I like a few South American lagers, German Lindener Spezial...(I can't understan why it's so cheap!)...and many types of Bavarian hefewiezen. Saranac is just about my favorite damn NY beer. Those guys REALLY know what they're doing. Like Sam Adams, they have so many varieties and each one they do as if they invested themselves.
So anyway, I rarely ever buy Becks or St.Pauli...and I wonder why yyou made these such a focus of topic(?) I was only comparing Becks to Busweiser. I also never mentioned anything about the German Rheinheitsgebot of 1516. There is one German beer which I NEVER buy anymore, and that's Heineken. I used to be a regular, avid drinker of it. Then they OBVIOUSLY changed the recipe slightly, at least 5 years ago, maybe more. I don't know what they did, but after that the beer sucked and I lost interest.
Sure, St. Pauli & Becks don't measure up to the smaller breweries of Germany. But they still almost disqualify Bud, Busch, Schlitz and the like...as even qualifying as beers. They...royally...SUCK! Germany has som really BAD beers as well...whjich more qualify as "malt beverages". One day I bought myself a 1/4 keg of Stiegl, and nursed it for about 24 hours (with sleep in bewteen! ;-) ) It REALLY sucked, and after that I needed a keg of Pepto Bismol to get back to normal. A close runner of in the German "Sheissebrau" department might be Warsteiner. Really nothing to write home about at all.
One of the worst American microbrews I ever had was Anchor Steam from San Francisco. I mean there's worse out there, but for the money, and the way they advertise it I was TOTALLY disappointed.
Anyway, to get totally defensive for a mo', here in NY and also PA we have so many local beers that you can try maybe 3 at every bar...and thy are truly well-crafted beers with a strongly "Dutch" tradition to them.
Anyway, I sampled a different beer just about every day for about for years. GOD, there are so many! I have come full-circle, and there are very few I haven;t triede at one time or another.
Fact is, there are many shitty beers out there for one reason or another...and maybe a top 2 or 3% which really qualify as whoopin' kickass beers, bocks, ales, porters, lagers, stouts, black&tans (Saranac makes a GREAT B&T!)...
So anyway, I consider "You need to drink more American Microbrews. Most American beer offerings are microbrews" .........as a real insult! Probably 1/2 of what I drink is local beer produced within 200 miles of my home!!
Instead of disagreeing with me, why don't you ADD something instead of attacking what I said?!
Here's the web-address for Uncle Rainer's micro-brewery in Bischofsgruen, Bavaria. Hoffentlich du hast viel Spass hier, und gute Deutsch gesprochen und gelesen! Tschau.

Sun, September 4, 2005 - 9:34 AMi don't care what the maximum shelf life is, if a beer has been sitting on the shelf for a year, there is a reason! back away slowly, and find a different beer.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 1:00 PMI have been adding beers but perhaps you have been to busy basking the sound of your own voice to notice. I do not mean to insult but I chose to defend what is the American Breweries you have gashed. You did not say specifically Bud, Miller, Coors, and PBR. You made a blanket statement about American Beer. -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 1:41 PMBASKING in the sound of my voice?! I love to drink and talk about beer. Enough said. If you have detailed info you;d also like to share...go for it.
In general, all the mainstream (and I believe I SAID mainstream before, so what's your beef?) American beers are based on slightly different versions of the same slaphappy, mass-production, convenient, not to mention CHEAP method.
Coors is one American beer I don't knock too much. When I am on a budget, it's one of my first American choices.
I also SPECIFIED SEVERAL AMERICAN MICROBREWS WHICH I HAVE A GREAT RESPECT FOR <---(in large-print because you missed it last time). And yeah, I do not mean to insult either...but what choice do you leave me but to make this point?
:-I
It seems like wherever I go, there are competetive people who miss 3/4 of what I write. I guess beer is a "manly" topic so guys just like to contradict each other wherever possible. Anyway, I am going to forget about that...and I am going to go have a beer. :-D

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?

Dear FRIEND....! :-D Beer often sits on a shelf because people are not adventurous enough to stray from the mainstream Alos, there are so many people out there who consider Michelob Light all they need! Also, the costs associated with importing or simply marking up a beer based on a a fancy European name keeps less adventurous types from trying something.
>as for all the bavarian hoopty-do, i'd love to go there sometime, it'd be fun. but sorry, my beer isn't going to be more world traveled than me. it'd sneer at me. i know it<
Beer is like a well-bred dog. Sometimes they bring different ideas (genes) from all over to mix the best with the best of the ideas. Saranac of NY imports hops from everywhere to make their beers...but still, it is made right in NY. Although the Egyptians had "beer", it was the Germans, Brits, Slavs, Irish and Vikings who invented it as we know it...because that's where the best hops and malts came from. Beer came a long long way in both spirit and form to touch your pallet. So don;t worry about "hoopty-do" just drink and be merry.
Tschau!

Sun, September 4, 2005 - 2:12 PMLol! I say that you are basking in the glory of your own voice becuase you have posted like 10 of the last 15 posts. You make blanket statements outside of the parameters of the topic. I do not mean to flame or troll here. Nor do I intend to insult. I just want to talk about beer as well. I just like to keep it within the topic. What you are saying, some of it is very interesting while other parts, the blanket statements are not. You should start a new thread about shelf life and good beers you have had.
Oh and you said Anchor is one of the worst while you like to drink Coors when the budget is tight. That right there is a joke.
As for missing mos6t of what you wrote, maybe it is because you are long winded at times on something outside of the topic.
So now back to the topic.
The worst beer I have ever had has got to be Damm in Spain. I once had a dark lager, I think it was supposed to be a bock. the beer was quite strong but thin. It had no flavor except for a thin metalic bitterness in the finish.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 5:46 PMdear random guy,
in the area where i live, beer *never* sits on the shelf (for a year) due to lack of adventuresome folks. there's a reason why we have huge chain stores devoted to the sole purpose of spreading alcoholism, dozens of local breweries and pubs, and local beer nights. heck, most of the people i know will try beers based solely on newness, or amusing name-ology.
as for the remainder of my post, and your response, you missed my point utterly in your attempt to "educate" us on the history of beer. i am not going to import beer from another country, when i can go brewery hopping 10 minutes from where i live. regardless of where they get their hops from, or the "worldliness" of my beer, my inference was in the obtaining of such malty bliss......in otherwords, to be perfectly clear, no mail or internet-order beer.
i can get good, not-year-old beer anytime just down the street.
however, as the aleman so thoughtfully points out, this thread is about bad beer.
my most recent crap beer was a hefeweisen. a friend played a joke on me and switched my glass. bastiches. -

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 6:31 PMValid points! there are no beers sitting on the shelves for a year. Most breweries buy back old beer. As well there are too many good breweries in the Bay Area as well as great beers on the shelves, stirring up interest. So I doubt there are a lack of beer adventure seekers.
Another bad beer, one of the worst in the world that I have had is (speaking of hefeweizens) is Widmer. It is uncharacteristic of a hefeweizen. It lacks those yummy bubblegum and clove notes. Instead it is bland to say the least. -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 8:02 PMNo beers sitting on the shelf for a year... Ok, well maybe not in your town. Why are "we" making this so Black&White? I have seen MANY beers sit in local shops (we have some BIG shops here in the Hudson Valley) for quite some time. Sometimes they get bad, sometimes they hold their own. IT DEPENDS ON THE BEER, AND THAT IS WHAT I AM TRYING TO GET ACROSS!!! I am going to stop now, because it's futile. Fopr God's sake...I don;t mean to talk myself up...but I have a degree in microbial biochemistry an I know the processes fairly well.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Sun, September 4, 2005 - 7:57 PMI had Damm once, and I didn't think nuch of it eiether. No wonder it's never seen around here. I like Coors because it's refreshing and "uncontaminated", yet it's a simple beer with not alot to say about it. You could say that anchor Steam has more flavor, and I'd agree...but that still doesn't whether it's a pleasing flavor or not. No joke.
I suppose I am guilty of wandering off the "rigid" topic here somewhat sometimes like you said...but if there's anything I DON'T do is make blanket statements. The reason go on so much (explaining again!) is because I am providing details...and I explain every single one of my claims whether you agree with it or not.
How many damn beers are made by Anheuser -Busch?! And do you know how many cousins Schlitz, Schmidts, Pabst, Old Milwaukee, Meister Brau...and a host of others which are defunct...have? The Milwaukee breweries have most of the saem chairmen, and they invest in the sameprocesses, equipment and other assets which all give it very little REAL variety...SO...if there's ANY guilt in "blanketing" and making generalizations...IT'S THOSE GODDAMN BREWERS THEMSELVES!!!
Are we going to go back onto the topic of Microbrews now?! I already told you I reckognize them and enjoy them.
YES I like to drink Coors when budeget is tight. YES I think Anchor Steam is NOT worth $6.99 a six-pak... For God's sake. How detailed do I have to be?!
You seem like you are making a competition rather than a discussion here EVERY time you answer me. And you are sarcastic every time (or cynical).
Damm was probably in the the same category as Stiegl...which was pretty bad and had me making random emergency trips to the bathroom for days.
Guy, nearly every paragraph I have written here has something in it about a beer which I didn't like. I an;t say exactly which beer qualifies, as worst as I have been sdrinking for over 20 years and many of those beers I never saw again.
Sometimes one topic leads to another. You really ought to just relax, forget about challenging and arguing, and have ba beer. Most of of what I have written has been to clarify things for YOU who keeps on asking hings which I have already covered.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 6:41 PMi didn't say nasty, i said snide. there is a difference. for instance, it is snide to say "you think you are a better judge", though it isn't nasty persay, especially since i never said i was a better judge of anything.
nasty beer identifies itself no matter how good or bad of a judge you are.
but, digression gets us nowhere, as this thread is starting to prove.
ale---
the thing about truck stop beer is half the time they won't even tell you what kind of beer it is. you ask "what kinds of beer are available" and they reply "will that be one or two beers?"
that should have been a warning ;D -

Mon, September 5, 2005 - 10:08 PMSnide and nasty mean pretty close to the same thing, so why do we have split hairs? Now you have just made me have to explain myself again.
OK, so now I see with what words I actually "hit" you, and where you got put on the defensive. What is your point by saying,
> you missed my point utterly in your attempt to "educate" us on the history of beer. i am not going to import beer from another country, when i can go brewery hopping 10 minutes from where i live. regardless of where they get their hops from, or the "worldliness" of my beer<
...if not to be snide? You are being mocking in every sense of the word, here! :-D You are mocking my background and the possibility that I might actually know something too instead of simply making your point without all the highfalutin airs. You are implying that you have everything you need within 10 minutes of you as your basic beer repertoire, and that my repertoire does not impress you.
So darling sweet Mishka, disagree if you like...that's fine but if you don't like snideness...don't use mockery to show how you disagree with someone, then. There are better more mature ways to express a simple disagreeance.

What brewpubs in the Bay Area have you visited or tried that proved less than stellar. What breweries products would rank as some of the worst ever? -
-
Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Mon, September 5, 2005 - 11:11 PMthe ones i disliked the most were most likely a personal taste issue. for instance, i was very disapproving of the selection at the russian river brewery, but as i prefer irish reds, i think it was due to the fact that the belgians they serve are very different from my usual tastes.
however, i must say, if you work at a pub, try to be skilled at matching beers to people. i asked for advice, and got a super light skank beer. it was not a good time for all.
i've had many many friends who worked now or in the past for lagunitas as well.... and yes, the staff DOES make a difference. i loved their brews in my youth, when everybody and their sister worked there, but as the social circle has departed, so has, unfortunately, much of my approval. -

Tue, September 6, 2005 - 5:15 PMHey I just remembered one.... so this place is called the Banjul Brewery, it is the only brewery in the country, so its the macro brew, but micro brew size. It also doubled as the coca cola plant too. At the end of the tour you could drink as much as you want...trouble is it was as weak as Bud and tasted of soap too. -Guess their bottle washing was bad too.

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Tue, September 6, 2005 - 8:23 PMI recently had the joy and pleasure of a vacation in the SF bay area, in which I had the delight of teasing my tongue with pleasures of local brewed delights. I will say that most beverages inwhich I had consumed brought great happyness in of no doubts would cause many others to cringe. I had the honor of consuming a large amount of Arrogant Bastard Ale, extremely drool worthy in my book. A wonderful, happyness, and pleasure bottled for my enjoyment. A couple of others though I did not enjoy as much were the "Kilt Lifter" "Red Rocket" "Attonement" and "Alley Cat". No, these were not brewed by the same brewer-Masters, I cannot recall whom they were brewed by, but they were all very enjoyable. The only complaints I would have would be against the "English Cream Stout" QUITE nasty to me. I plan to go a second round with it to find out if I simply got a nasty batch...... As for world beers, I have tasted many; yet was too young and stupid to recall what was which, so I have begun do so now. I prefer a red, or dark lager. It is my quest to find the "Perfect beer" for me. Ü Though mainstream "American" beers (coors, butwiper, miler) and crap such as, continues to provide great entertainment at the expense of potential great beer. -

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Wed, August 29, 2007 - 11:58 AM#1: Chicken BBQ Beer - a homebrewing friend decided it would be interesting to brew with chicken bullion and a bit of BBQ sauce. Although it sounded good at the time, this experiment was NOT a success...
#2: Rogue Brewery 'Chai Porter' - this was an 'experimental' batch cooked up at the brewery in Newport. I sampled at the pub in the brewery. Needless to say, the fine folks at Rogue, whom I love, decided not to commercialize this particular flavor.
#3: Oude Gueuze (Gueuze style beer from Belgium) - some people love this sour beer, brewed with brettanomyces yeast (same as used for wine). I am not one of those people and believe wine should keep its brettanomyces to iteself.
#4: Russian River Sanctification - same as #3. Again, don't begrudge those who enjoy, but think this stuff tastes like terribly off grapefruit juice.
#5: Ole 6-pack ($3.99): I don't know if this Mexico-sourced swill is even made anymore. Bought some at grad school on a frugal whim. Have regretted ever since...
#6: Old Milwaukee (5 years old): While I can espouse the virtues of aging bottle conditioned ale, I made the mistake of being optimistic about a 6-pack of Old Milwaukee that had been hiding in my Mom's garage for 5 years. As it was in New England, it had been subject to five seasons of freezing followed by sweltering summers. Yesss... this was the anti-beer...
I'm sure there are many more

I bought a 6-pack 2 years ago, drank one, and returned the other 5 to the store (here in cali, you can do that). I would never pick up one of those again!

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Thu, September 20, 2007 - 6:10 PMCoors Light. The nastiest tasting excuse for beer that I have ever had! On my birthday last year I was taken to a local steakhouse. They didn't have much of a Light section so I ordered the Coors Light. What a mistake, one chug and I wanted to puke, I will NEVER even think of drinking that rat piss again. I sent it back and ordered a Jack Daniel's and Coke to take the taste out of my mouth. I can't believe they even sell that crap!

God bless you !
That's why we export the crap... I can believe they brew it under licence in Canada - you would think they would pick a better Aussie beer than that swill !

Re: What is the Worst Beer you have ever had?
Tue, October 30, 2007 - 3:37 PMI have tried quite a few of the "worst" beers listed and yes, I have to agree, they are pretty bad. However, had anyone ever tried "Skullsplitter"? It is an Orkney ale. OH MY GOD. It is disgustingly sweet and has an aroma of sweaty hair!!!! Oh yeah, I drank it, I paid $2.50 for a 10oz bottle and there is no way I was gonna pour it!!
If I remember, it is named after some famous Viking. I think a more appropriate name would be "Sweaty Hair from some famous Viking dude" beer!!
