One part beer (lager, ale or stout) and one part cider.
Only one I've tried is with Smithwicks and Strongbow. I thought it was a nice change. The sweetness would be a bit much for me to drink them all night, but I thought it was good.
Any other opinions?

Mon, January 29, 2007 - 1:55 AMOnly some pubs will serve this in the UK, technically its illegal because of its potency. Generally consummed by under-aged drinkers over here :-) -

Re: Snakebite
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 4:16 AMReally? I had no idea. Maybe this is a dumb statement, but isn't the drink about the same alcohol by volume (ABV) as cider or beer alone?
As a sidenote, I learned the hard way there's a difference between Strongbow Original and Strongbow Super. I gave a case of the later as a gift to a British friend who informed me that the alcohol content of 'Super' is extremely high and typically drunk out of brown paper bags. LOL
Just to look at the cider I had...
Strongbow cider - 5.3% ABV (4.5% draught in pubs)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strongbow_Cider
and I don't think Smithwick's is more potent than the average ale.

Re: Snakebite
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 4:51 AMI'm not really too sure why either, as the alcohol content can't be too much higher than either the beer or cider. Its possibly because the mixture is potent, but how I'm not sure why that is either!! Ever heard the saying, don't mix grape and grain? It could be something to do with this. Your beer would be the grain and the cider the grape (or fruit) in this case.
Stupid rule in any case. What is there to stop you having a pint of cider and then a pint of beer? Apparently we're not allowed to serve tripe spirit measures over here either, but I could order 20 over the course of an evening!! Enforcement of these rules is entirely dependent on the establishment you go into really, as I've had both snakebite and triple measures of spirits in pubs over here ;-) -

Re: Snakebite
Mon, January 29, 2007 - 5:09 AMYour theory makes sense to me. I bet if I drank enough of them, the hangover would be worse than if I stuck to one of them alone.
Which reminds me... champaign hangovers are the worst. Ooops, sorry. This is a a beer tribe.
You got me thinking about the triples. I'm not sure I can get them here either. I know I can order a double. And that is ironic that someone can order any number of single shot drinks but not combined together. Reminds me of the inane law around me for gambling boats. No land-based casinos allowed but put it on a boat that never leaves dock, and it's ok.

Re: Snakebite
Tue, January 30, 2007 - 2:42 PMThanks for the recommendation Hannah. I'm going to ask for that next time. I know I've seen Red Stripe but not optimistic about Scrumpy Jack. May end up being Strongbow.

Sun, September 16, 2007 - 1:59 AMI really enjoy them.
I've had them with Strongbow.
I also like the shot drink called a snakebite but this isn't a liquor tribe. :)
